A REPORT ON ANA BAUCHI YUSUF ALI
GRANT AND THE STATE OF AFFAIRS ON ITS LITERARY ACTIVITIES
Preamble/Introduction
The report here is a
cursory overview of the state of affairs of ANA Bauchi State Chapter and other
issues regarding Yusuf Ali Grant of which Bauchi State was a
beneficiary/recipient.
Objective
The report is presented
to:

Brief the national body of ANA on the state
of affairs as regards Yusuf Ali Grant of which Bauchi State was a recipient.
·
Brief the national body on the day – to
– day running of literary activities/campaigns in the state.
·
Brief the national body on the
membership participation so far.
·
Brief the national on the progress made
in ANA Bauchi Chapter so far.
The
ANA Yusuf Ali Grant
In April, 2016, the ANA
Bauchi Chapter under the chairmanship of Kabiru Abdullahi received the sum of One
Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150,000.00) in Ilorin following the
approval of its proposal for literary awareness campaign in the state (the
literary awareness campaign focused on the establishment of a literary contest/short
story writing contest for budding writers in post - secondary levels in Bauchi
State). Posters, flyers, pamphlets were pasted and posted to ventilate the
event and give it the necessary literary texture and condor.
In the end, only ten entries
were received. The entries were sent to a PhD in English Language/Literary Studies
in Bauchi State University, Itas Gadau for assessment and grading. Report of
the PhD stated categorically that the stories/entries were deficient in
literary taste, structure and form, not to talk of grammatical crimes, atrocities,
sins and ignorance of literariness – in other words, the entries were
literarily too good to be graded, not to talk of receiving prizes.
The PhD recommended a
workshop for budding writer in the state. The Yusuf Ali grant is, therefore,
yet to be completely utilized.
Membership
Form/Registration
There is a general lack
of literary enthusiasm in Bauchi State. There is total absenteeism in monthly
reading sessions in organized under the interim chairman. Though invitations
for reading sessions are sent, days before the activities via SMS, the would-be
members hardly show up. Only two young writers have obtained the forms so far.
Delegates
to the ANA 35th Anniversary International Annual Convention
Effort is ongoing to
mobilize delegates for the ANA 35th. Anniversary International Annual
Convention. However, the current financial difficulties experienced by civil
servants in the country, with many states unable to pay basic salary of workers,
the turn up and participation in the convention will be poor. This is the more
reason the chapter is unable to hand in list of its delegates on or before 7th
October, 2016.
Conclusion
The above is, so far, a
true representation of the state of affairs in ANA Bauchi State. Until there a
state of emergency is declared on the death of literature in the state, the
situation will remain the same.
Recommendation
It
is recommended that
·
The national body of ANA host/organize a
national event in Bauchi State to address lack of literary enthusiasm in the
state.
·
The national body of ANA pays courtesy
call to stakeholders to sensitize youth on the value of literature to personal
development, cultural growth and emotional/social balance.
