2016 YUSUF ALI COMPETITION
ANA BAYELSA STATE CHAPTER REPORT 






 WRITING A FINAL CHAPTER 14 FOR CHINUA ACHEBE'S ''A MAN OF THE PEOPLLE'' 
INTRODUCTION 

This year's Yusuf Ali/ANA Reading competition was specifically targeted at tertiary institutions. It is unique in that states were asked to make their own proposals for assessment by the National Executive.Bayelsa's proposal was successful; hence, we are just one of the 16 states that were given the grant for 2016.
The essence of the Bayelsaproposal is simply for contestants to read Chinua Achebe's 1966 novel ''A Man of the People'' and to write a final chapter 14 beyond the 13 chapters of the original book. Ten students from the tertiary institutions in Bayelsastate indicated interest and were given an Essay test, after which the best 5 were selected for the final phase of the competition.
A one-day seminar on creative writing was then organised to prepare the contest for the final phase. The finale of the competition was held on the 27th of August 2016 where the winner was announced.
For ease of implementation, the competition was organised in phases.

PHASE 1: CALL FOR ENTRY AND PRE-COMPETITION PUBLICITY
Letters were written to the 4 tertiary institutions in BayelsaState, namely:
1. Federal University Otuoke
2. Niger Delta University, Amassoma
3. Federal Polytechnic Ekowe
4. College of Education, Sagbama.
Additionally, e-flyers were designed and placed online for publicity and to broaden the field of participants. To promote the event, some members of the association were on a live Radio programme to talk about the sponsor of the competition and the reason behind it. The chairman was also featured in the news in one of the major radio stations in the state.
PHASE II: ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION
A total of 30 forms were given out to intending participants, but 10 students showed up for the first phase of the competition, which was the Essay writing competition. The competition was conducted by the Association, and it held on the 9th of July 2016, at the Faculty of Law, Niger Delta University Ijaw.
PHASE III: CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOOP
At the end of the Essay writing competition, the best 5 performing students were invited for a Creative Writing seminar to prepare them for the finale, which was for them to read Chinua Achebe’s “A Man of the People” and to write a chapter 14 to the book. They had 10 days to do this. The seminar took place at the Prof. Steve Azaiki Public Library, Yenagoa on the 10th of August 2016. Mr. Ebinyo Ogbowei and Dr. Odingowei Kwokwo were resource persons at the seminar.
PHASE IV: THIRTEENTH CHAPTER FOR THE MAN OF THE PEOPLE
The candidates were given 10 days to read through the novel, write a thirteenth chapter not exceeding 1500 words. The submission date for entry was 24th August 2016.
GRAND FINALE: ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS AND PRESENTATION OF PRIZES
The grand finale held on 27th August 2016 at the ANA Bayelsa Secretariat, Ijaw House Yenagoa where the winners were announced and prizes given to the winner of the competition. Mr. Darlington Eze Chibuzor, a second year student of the Niger Delta Amassoma Bayelsa State was adjudged the winner of the competition and he went home with books, a smart phone and cash prize of N10,000. The other four contestants went home with consolation prizes of books and N5000.00 each.

The chapter received the sum of N150,000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) only as a grant from Yusuf Ali (SAN) through the National EXCO to execute the competition.
